I'm Not A Fan Of Meal Prepping Or Meal Plans

Before you freak out or get defensive...

If you didn't know already, we offer a sample meal plans that fits your targets at no additional charge. We are more than happy to alter it to fit your unique schedule, lifestyle choices, and food preferences.

Here's a plan I wrote this morning for a client who has recently decided to adopt a mostly vegan diet:

I DON'T have a problem with custom meal plans for people adopting a new lifestyle so they can develop an awareness of what is effective for achieving their unique goals.

I DON'T have a problem with using meal prep for convenience.

I DON'T have a problem with meal prepping to save money.

I DON'T have a problem with anyone making an effort to do anything that they think is helping them achieve a healthier, happier, or more fulfilling life.

I will even concede that meal prepping is almost certainly the most effective way to guarantee short term results.

But here's something that I believe applies to pretty much every endeavor:

"If your methods for success are highly conditional, you're setting yourself up for failure. If you can't do it anywhere, always, and forever, any progress you make is only temporary!"

Here's what I do have a problem with...

If you can ONLY have a healthy relationship with food through tupperware containers and you fall off the wagon or feel "exposed" without it...

That chink in your armor is probably going to make the difference between long term success and failure.

If you can ONLY have a healthy relationship with food by following an exact meal plan and feel completely lost without it...

That dependence is probably going to keep you from achieving your goals or maintaining your results.

Here's why:

There's something that most people fail to realize before starting any sort of nutrition program.

In a calendar year, there are:

  • 104 Saturdays and Sundays
  • 11 Federal Holidays
  • 10 Annual Holidays (Mother's Day, Easter, etc.)
  • An average of 10 vacation days
  • Roughly 30 other special occasions (Anniversaries, graduations, birthdays, sporting events, baptisms, weddings, births, funerals, etc.)

165 days a year comes to 45% of the year.

Roughly half of our lives are spent outside of our typical routine.

That's way more than enough time to negate any any and all progress made in your typical 9-5 routine. In my opinion, for the vast majority of people, these common meal plan/meal prep approaches won't put a dent in our epidemic of chronic disease.

The inherent and almost universal failure to recognize this is detrimental to our mental approach to fat loss and it's why so many people have this validating and self-delusional "I'll start on Monday!" attitude.

This is why when someone decides to simply eat and drink an amount of food that doesn't cause their body to literally create and store additional body fat while on vacation, at a party, or just out to eat on a uneventful Saturday their family and peers will chime in with things like:

  • "What's wrong with you? It's a party! Have another drink."
  • "You're on vacation! Live a little!"
  • "It's just one slice."

If every special occasion and hurdle life throws in your way puts you off course, you're never going to make it.
